This book always seemed to catch my eye. But for some reason, probably my general bustling busyness, I didn’t read it. Man, oh man, was I in for a treat! When I finally did read it, I was astounded, not only by the quality, but also by the ingeniousness in the central ideas. My rating below is a four, though normally, I would say it was not one of my most favorite books. However, the inventiveness and inclusiveness of creative visuals popped it up to a four for me.
Title: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Author: Ransom Riggs
Age Group: Middle and high schoolers
My Rating: 4/4 stars
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children isn’t just a book, and that is what makes it so fascinating to read. The story starts with the main character, Jacob, who believes he saw a terrifying monster in the woods the day his grandfather died. His concerned parents send him to a counselor to try and help him overcome his diagnosed “acute stress disorder.” However, he soon goes to the island of Cairnholm with his father, after convincing him that it could help his mental health. Jacob doesn’t find exactly what he expected to find on the island. He is suddenly thrown into a melting pot (metaphorically) of children, secrets, and monsters that will change his life– and others’ lives– forever… dun Dun DUN!
I would recommend this book to people who like adventurous books that are filled to the brim with mystery and intrigue. It also has many references to World War ll for those who are interested in history. Now, here is the special part (yippee!). This book isn’t just told through words! It’s also partly told through pictures. Photos of characters and other mentioned people are dispersed throughout the book, perhaps one per chapter. How original is that? Pretty original! Pretty peculiar, too (*wink*).
This book’s special characteristics make it even more intriguing and spellbinding for me to read than if it was just a simple novel. Happy Reading!

I kinda felt disappointed, from the cover I expected something else, but for the rest I agree with you.

Honestly I had expected it to be a scary book so I had steered clear. (I judged a book by its cover) until finally I read the back of the book and actually bought it that day!
