I can remember my babysitter when I was very young telling me this story over and over. It was a twist on Cinderella (which she also told me over and over). Ever since I can remember, it was one of my favorite books. I have read it at least 3 times in my lifetime so far, and each time it was just as spellbinding. Although, of course, I now know the story like the back of my hand, especially after also seeing the movie a few times (which is completely different from the book, though a good film in its own right).
Title: Ella Enchanted
Author: Gail Carson Levine
Age Group: Anyone really if they can read well enough
My Rating: 4/4 stars
Ella is a simple girl. Her father is a businessman, leaving Ella to spend most of her time with her house’s staff since her mother died when Ella was young. Ella isn’t normal though, oh no, indeed. When she was but a baby she was cursed by a fairy to follow all orders given to her, something that makes her life horrendous. When Ella is sent off to school with her ungracious (putting it mildly) stepsisters, she runs away to convince the fairy to remove her curse, getting into plenty of trouble (and a little romance) along the way.
I would recommend this book, because as a first read it is exciting and just plain cool to see what the author does with the plot. However, as a re-read, having already known the plot beforehand doesn’t make it any less of a page-turner.
Ella Enchanted is a book that you can read as many times as you want and never get bored. Happy Reading!
