Book Review: The Clockwork Ghost (York #2)

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well! I read the first installment of this series (York) a few months ago and thought it was a super fun book. I loved that it was full of puzzles and random fun facts and how original the idea of the cipher was. Basically, it’s a book for nerds! Yay! Just recently, I got around to reading the sequel and I have to say it was just as fascinating as the first one!

Warning: There are book one spoilers in this review!

Title: The Clockwork Ghost (York #2)

Author: Laura Ruby

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Genre: MG (Middle-Grade) sci-fi and mystery

Synopsis: “It was only a few weeks ago that the Biedermann twins, Tess and Theo, along with their friend Jaime Cruz, followed the secrets of the Morningstarrs’ cipher further anyone had in its century-and-a-half history—and destroyed their beloved home in the process. But the Old York Cipher still isn’t solved. The demolition of 354 W. 73rd Street only revealed the next clue in the greatest mystery of the modern world, and if Tess, Theo, and Jaime want to discover what lies at the end of the puzzle laid into the buildings of New York by its brilliant, enigmatic architects, they will need to press on.

But doing so could prove even more dangerous than they know. It is clear that the Morningstarr twins marshaled all the strange technology they had spent their lives creating in the construction of the Cipher, and that technology has its own plans for those who pursue it. It is also clear that Tess, Theo, and Jaime are not the only ones on the trail of the treasure. As enemies both known and unknown close in on them from all sides and the very foundations of the city seem to crumble around them, they will have to ask themselves how far they will go to change the unchangeable—and whether the price of knowing the secrets of the Morningstarrs is one they are willing to pay.”

We left off with our three young cipherists having blown up their building, which was a shocking cliffhanger. This second book picks up about a week after that happened, with them already hot on the trail of the next clue. The first book was full of twists and turns and I was hoping that this book would continue on with this trend and be just as fun. Thankfully, it definitely was.

The puzzles that the characters faced were so expertly crafted that I really had no idea how they would be solved, which made reading this book so fun. I love when an author challenges the reader and/or the characters with riddles, which is why I love mysteries and puzzles so much (though not in real life… then they’re just confusing). If you liked the first book of this series, then you will definitely love this second installment.

I also just want to mention how amazing the world building is in this book. It seems so seamless and I was literally so immersed in the world of York that I almost forgot that we don’t have weird little spiders that water our plants. The technology, the characters, and the Cipher all just melted together to form one awesome book. And that’s all I have to say! I finished it feeling inspired to write something about puzzles, too, which was a great feeling since my writing drive has been pretty stagnant lately.

Happy reading! Do you write and if so, how has your writing life been lately?
